God's Word is worth remembering.
Scripture isn't information we want to read once and leave behind. God gave us His Word to know, treasure, meditate on, obey, and carry with us. God makes that abundantly clear in His word!

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

The goal isn't to know more verses, the goal is to know God
The way God decided to communicate who He is with humanity is through His Word. What better way to know Him than through His Word!
But Ultimately...
Why whole books?
Memorizing one verse is good.
Memorizing the context is better.
Jo memorizes the verse
Jo memorizes 1 John 4:8, "God is love." As he grows, Jo will encounter countless ideas about what love is and what love requires. Without realizing it, he can begin interpreting John's words through definitions he has absorbed elsewhere.
Jo memorizes the context
But now imagine that Jo knows those words in their context. He has memorized all of 1 John —not only “God is love,” but John's explanation of what God's love is, how God demonstrated it, and how love is most clearly demonstrated through obedience.
Having memorized the context, Jo is better able to acurately and Biblically discern understand the true character behind the God of the Word.

God's Word is what He promises to use to save the lost and sanctify the saved. And it wasn't written as fragments collected over thousands of years — it was written with intentionality and a flow of thought. Consider the following:
