When you find yourself without a Bible…is your family prepared?
Q:
What do these three places have in common…?
1. A concentration camp
2. The drivers seat of a car
3. The hospital operation room
A: There’s no Bible!
Preparation:
Whether we're faced with solitary confinement, or simply to a discouraged friend on a drive, we need to have His word hidden in our hearts so that we are prepared to glorify Him in whatever situation God places us in.
What does God say about the importance of Memorizing His Word?
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
- Deuteronomy 6
Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47 For it is no empty word for you, but your very life,
- Deuteronomy 32
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
- Joshua 1
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
- Psalm 119
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
- Colossians 3
An so many more!
But here’s the problem…
Jo Schmo's parents help him memorize the verse “God is Love”
Jo Schmo grows older and starts to see this…
Because Jo memorized out of context, Jo is now viewing God through the lens of the culture!
We need to flip that around...
Jo’s parents teach him to memorize the entire book of 1 John where God exposits His definition of love
Jo Schmo grows older and starts to see this…
Because Jo Memorized in context, Jo is now viewing the culture through the lens of God’s Word.
What does God say about the importance of Memorizing His Word in context?
I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
- Acts 20
From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work...

...For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
- 2 Timothy 3-4
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth
- 2 Timothy 2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- Romans 12:2
And so many more!
Okay…hypothetically memorizing a whole book would be great…
…but practically that’s really hard!
I'm so glad you asked...
That's exactly why By the Book exists.
God has called us to make Bible memory so easy and so practical that your family can memorize whole books in long-term memory with ease.
Check out these people recite...
I can't believe it!
How did you do that??
